How to Upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 for Free

 A lot has changed in six long years, and Microsoft came back, finally, with a new Operating System. We didn’t skip and numbered this time, and the new OS is named Windows 11. Check for Minimum Requirements for Windows 11

Before you think of installing Windows 11, you have to check your system for all the minimum requirements you need to upgrade to the latest OS. If you don’t meet these requirements, then you might not be able to download Windows 11 on your computer. You may have to consider buying a new PC for Microsoft’s latest OS. If you are running Windows 10, you can use the PC Health Check app to view the compatibility of your system for Windows 11.

Check out all the different requirements listed below.

Processor

  • Speed: 1 GHz or more
  • Cores: 2 or more
  • Architecture: 64 bit

A 64-bit processor or SoC is required for Windows 11. It should be made up of two or more cores with a minimum speed of one Gigahertz.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

  • 4 GB minimum

You need at least 4 gigabytes of RAM to run Windows 11.

Storage

  • Storage Space: 64 GB or more

For the latest install of Windows 11, you need more than 64 gigabytes of storage capacity in your computer.

System Firmware

  • UEFI and Secure Boot capable.

The system on which you want to install Windows 11 should support the UEFI file system and Secure Boot option.

TPM (Trusted Platform Module)

  • TPM version 2.0

The TPM version should be 2.0, which will help Windows be more secure.

Graphics Card

  • Compatible with DirectX 12 or later
  • Support WDDM 2.0 Driver

The Graphics card should be compatible with DirectX 12 or later, and it should support the Windows Display Driver Model 2.0.

Display

  • Resolution: at least 720p
  • Size: 9” or more
  • Color Depth: 8 bit

The system’s display should be at least 9 inches and 720p resolution. Minimum 8-bit color depth is also required.

Network Connection

  • Broadband, Wi-Fi, or ADSL

Windows 11 Home edition requires a network connection to run.

Upgrading from Windows 10 or lower

If you are already using Windows 10 or lower, you can directly upgrade your Windows to the latest version, Windows 11, for free.

Using the Windows Update in the Settings

This is the best and recommended way of upgrading to Windows 11. After you have checked your PC for the minimum requirement, if you meet all the requirements, you can see a pop-up from the windows that you can upgrade to the latest version. Use the following steps to check the settings for the update.

  • Select Start.
  • Click on the Settings (Gear Icon).
  • Click on the Update & Security tab.
  • Then go to the Windows Update.
  • Click on Check for updates.
  • Windows will look for the latest update and show you a prompt to install Windows 11.
  • Click on Install Now to start the upgrade process.

Using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant

If Windows has not recommended the update already in your Windows Update settings, the easiest way of upgrading to Windows 11 is to use the Windows 11 Installation Assistant.

  • Open your favorite web browser and search for the Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
  • Go to the original Microsoft website (most probably the first link).
  • Click on the Download Now button.
  • The Assistant Installer will be downloaded to your PC.

Note: Make sure you are clicking the Download Now Button under the Windows 11 Installation Assistant, first one.

  • After the download is complete, go to your Download folder.
  • Double-click on the installer file. Click Run.
  • You need to be the administrator of the account to run this program.
  • Windows 11 Installation Assistant will open.
  • Once the tool has confirmed all the hardware settings for compatibility, the License Agreement will pop up.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the tool is ready, tap the Restart Now button.
  • It will take some time to install Windows 11 on your computer.

Note: Windows will restart several times during the installation. Make sure you don’t Turn Off your computer during the installation.

Using the Create Windows 11 Installation media tool

You can also create a bootable USB drive or CD drive to install Windows 11 on your PC using a bootable media creation tool provided by Microsoft. Download the Creation Tool from the Microsoft website and Follow the instructions below to complete the Installation.

  • Open a web browser and search for the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool.
  • Go to the Microsoft website.
  • Click on the Download Now button to download under the Creation Tool.
  • After the tool has been downloaded.
  • Go to the Download folder and run the Media Creation Tool.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • On the page saying “What do you want to do?” click Create installation media for another PC.
  • Click Next.
  • Choose the LanguageEdition, and 64 bit for Windows 11.
  • Select the type of media you are using to create a bootable Windows 11 setup.
  • USB: Make a bootable USB drive. (At least 8 GB of space required)
    • ISO File: A disc image will be downloaded, which can be used for making a bootable DVD later.
  • You can now follow the same steps explained below to use the bootable media created above.

Using the Download Windows 11 Disk Image option

Use the below steps to download a Windows 11 Disc image which you can use to create a bootable Windows 11 disk (USB or DVD).

  • Open a web browser and search for Download Windows 11 Disk Image.
  • Click on the Download button under the Download Windows 11 Disk Image.
  • Click on Select Download and choose Windows 11.
  • Tap the Download again.
  • After that, select the product language.
  • Tap on the Download button again.
  • After that, click on the 64-bit Download button.
  • The Disc Image will start downloading.
  • Use any third-party Media Creation Tool to make a Bootable Disk.

After the successful creation of the Bootable Media, using the Windows Media Creation Tool or Third-party one, follow the below steps to install from it.

  • Insert the DVD or attach the USB drive to the PC.
  • Restart your PC.
  • If the PC won’t load the bootable media automatically, you have to go to your BIOS settings to change the Boot Order.
  • Make the USB or DVD the 1st Priority Device.
  • Save the changes and restart again.
  • After the bootable media loads, the home page of Windows 11 will be shown.
  • Select your Language, Time, and Keyboard layout.
  • Click Next and finally click on Install Windows.
