MSI Pulse GL66 Gaming Laptop Review

MSI Pulse GL66 is a mid-range laptop that comes out as an odd beast. The laptop’s aesthetics are similar to the old-age gaming notebooks, chunky and all-plastic. It comes packed with the latest technology, but this odd notebook’s specs make us scratch our dome. The powerful 11th Gen Core i7 is paired with the lowest take of the Ampere architecture, RTX 3050 Ti. This lower tear card makes us think that this is a budget laptop. Still, the price of $1.099 puts it in the mid-range category where the other laptops, Acer Nitro 5 and Dell G3 15, come with a bit of lower grade or last generation of the processor but with a better graphics card, i.e., RTX 3060.

These other laptops make much more sense with their combination of the specifications than the pair in the MSI Pulse GL66. Let’s look at all the specifications of the MSI Pulse GL66 below.

Coming back to the MSI Pulse GL66 performance, the 16GB of RAM is plenty enough for all the modern games. This RAM is true dual-channel memory, so the CPU has plenty of bandwidth to rev itself higher for performance. MSI has provided 11th Gen Core i7 11800H in this baby beast. This is currently the latest hardware as Alder Lake has only landed for the desktop computers right now. Intel Core i7 11800H is an eight-core processor which has a base clock of 2.3 GHz and can turbo boost itself up to 4.6 GHz.

This is a powerful chip that can dash out serious performance, but it produces some lackluster scores in the multi-core performance workloads. The CPU didn’t go above 81 degrees, even in performance mode, but it shows that the CPU is not pushing itself to the max due to the underwhelming cooling solutions. We appreciate the quietness of the machine even on the performance mode, but there should be the option to push the performance aspect of the device when needed.

MSI Pulse GL66 Performance

Let’s now talk about the other main performance part of the laptop, which is, of course, the GPU. At first glance, by looking at the GPU paired with the Core i7 by MSI, you would think that the GPU will be of the lower tier, but MSI Pulse GL66 is quipped with an RTX 3050ti. The lack of VRAM is the main reason that hampers the performance of this laptop drastically. It is not able to play the latest games on the highest settings due to the lack of GPU RAM. The mere VRAM of 4GB is not enough for modern games to play even in modest settings.

Nobody buys a gaming laptop to play the games only released that year. People want to buy a gaming machine that is somewhat future-proof so that they are able to play games that will be released in the coming few years.

The recommendation of this baby beat is pretty hard for the gamers from us as the lack of VRAM in the GPU is making the one thing which this laptop is made for, gaming, annoying. Demanding games like Metro Exodus and Horizon Zero Dawn crashed so many times in our testing. Laptops having the aging RTX 2060 with older generations of processors are performing better in some aspects.

One thing that favors this chunky plastic box is that many of the parts are not glued to the motherboard and are upgradable, which is one of the major selling points of the laptop. This might be the choice if you are particularly going for a high-end 1080p gaming experience. The VRAM of GPU is the only concern that holds this laptop from being an excellent choice in mid-range instead of a baby beast performer.
