Qualcomm has announced the latest mobile platform, which will be equipped with the next-gen flagship phones. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is the ninth release in the flagship mobile platform, Snapdragon series. Qualcomm has also decided to change the naming convention of its Adreno GPU, which makes things more confusing.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is comprised of an amped-up 18-bit triple image signal processor (ISP), Qualcomm’s first-ever Armv9 CPU cores, and more capable machine learning (ML). These are already expected from a yearly-wise update from Qualcomm, but there are some small changes hidden inside the SoC. Let’s look at all the different changes and new features of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 | New CPU and GPU features
The earlier announcement in the year gave us a good idea of what to expect from the performance of the flagship smartphones launching in 2022. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is equipped with a single Cortex-x2 high-performance core clocked at 3GHz, which is higher than last year, two Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.5GHz four Cortex-A510 energy-efficient cores. The energy cores are just clocked at 1.8GHz. Qualcomm has used the same tried and tested CPU arrangements, 1+3+4 tri-cluster. Google was slightly more experimental with their 2+2+4 arrangement in Google Tensor.
Qualcomm said they are looking at a 20 percent performance increase over the last generation of Snapdragon 888. The power-saving is seen at 30 percent more than the previous generation. Qualcomm also added that they optimized the cores with their power systems, which are responsible for higher efficiency gains rather than peak performance improvements.
To be fair, battery efficiency is much more looked at these days than the raw performance of the device.
Qualcomm is making use of the new technology known as “merged-core.” This helps reduce the overall core area and helps improve performance on some occasions, where cores share large cache sizes instead of small individually.
Talking about the graphical processing power of the Snapdragon 8 Gen1, it comes with an in-house Adreno GPU, whose name is not revealed, as Qualcomm is removing the numbering system. Qualcomm is saying they are getting a 30 percent overall increment in the performance over the last-gen GPU, which is impressive, but they have also mentioned that if you are using Vulkan API, the performance boost can reach a staggering 60 percent. The Vulkan API performance might be high due to the poor optimization in the last-gen chips.
The latest Graphic Chip supports “desktop-level” volumetric rendering, which helps achieve better graphics in next-gen mobile games. There is no ray tracing here as we are still talking about a mobile-oriented graphic chip.
Finally, we have to see it before believing all these great-sounding performance increases and energy efficiency talks. We will need to get hands-on with the latest chip to see all the features in the real practical life uses and scenarios.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 | Improved photography and Machine Learning
You know that machine learning and image processing go hand-in-hand these days. Most vendors are proving this by implementing more and more features with the use of AI processing. The most notable change in this generation comes to the ISP of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
Triple ISP layout stays the same as the last generation, but it has been upgraded to an 18-bit imaging pipeline from a last-gen 14-bit one. This enables the ISP to process 3.2 gigapixels per second, much more than 2.7 gigapixels in the last generation. This new setup makes Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 capable of shooting 108 MP images with zero shutter lag.
Video capabilities of the new chip mostly stay the same as the last generation, but Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 supports 8K @ 30fps with the inclusion of HDR now. Some other image tricks are baked into the latest processor by Qualcomm. A face detection capability of identifying up to 300 facial landmarks based on improved AI, dedicated bokeh-engine to apply blur in 4K videos, video super-resolution, and more.
Qualcomm has doubled the tensor performance inside its latest Hexagon DSP with the help of double shared system memory on the processor. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 further supports mixed int8 and int16 precision calculations within the software SDK.
A dedicated ISP of its own is included with the 3rd gen Sensing Hub, which supports VGA resolution. This ISP is tasked with running an always-on facial detection feature with low power consumption. This new feature is not used for security purposes, but it can help in detecting when to initiate the face unlocking and better prevention of screen-peaking.
All these new capabilities of the SoC sound great, but we have to see how much of these new features will be taken advantage of by the different smartphone manufacturers.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 | What to expect from it
The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC promises a 20 percent and 30 percent increase in performance and battery efficiency department. Still, people using the latest chip right now, Snapdragon 888, will surely not feel very much different. We still think that the new Snapdragon processor is still not powerful enough to go toe to toe with the new Apple A15 Bionic SoC.
We are expecting the first smartphone with the latest Snapdragon Chip to get announced in the latter half of December this year, but it can be the possibility of getting the first hearing of the SoC in a phone releasing at the start of the next year.
