Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891 Review

Many budget-friendly desktops skip on the performance aspect of the PC, but Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891 doesn’t.  This micro-tower PC can deliver better performance as it is equipped with Intel core i3’s and can get more powerful with higher variants for a little more price. For an already low-price bracket, it even comes with a few extra goodies like a DVD burner and a 12-month subscription to McAfee LiveSafe. Integrated graphics mean it will not perform best in high-end games, but for general purposes, it performs decently. We have tested the lower trim of the bunch, and if you want to squeeze out a bit more performance, you can upgrade the desktop to a higher specification.

Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891 Exterior

As Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891 is a micro-tower, it is considerably smaller than a mid-tower desktop PC. It is 12.8 inches in height, 11.5 inches long, and 6.1 inches wide. Some other offerings are slimmer, but this new machine is more powerful and future-proof due to its upgradeability.

The front panel configuration of the Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891 includes two USB 3.2 Gen 1, one Type-A and other Type-C, two legacy USB 2.0, and a headphone jack. The power button is also located above these ports. This is a satisfactory selection of ports.

Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891

On the top of the front panel, you will find the DVD +/- RW burner. The CDs are a thing of the past now, but a DVD writer included is still appreciable.

Let’s look at the back of the Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891 now as it contains the most important ports and sockets. On the top, you will find a headphone jack highlighted in green accent, an HDMI port below that, which is an older 1.4b spec version, so stop yourself from hooking up this PC to a 4k Display or a TV. You are limited to 4k at 30 frames per second.

Unfortunately, due to the single HDMI port, you can only use one screen with this PC at a time with a modern level of display configuration. Below the HDMI port, you will find a VGA Display connector. This VGA connector is a good addition because it helps you connect some old legacy monitor to your machine. Other ports at the back include 2 USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports, two USB 2.0 ports, and Gigabit LAN Ethernet.

You can install a separate Graphics Card if you want more display ports, but as the power supply is limited to 260-watt, it is insufficient for a good dedicated graphic card. Dell also offers the same model with a higher spec dedicated card with a more powerful power supply, but you lose all the value for money aspect as it is higher priced.

Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891 Interior

Loosen up the two thumbscrews on the left panel, and you can get inside the Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891. The Dell Inspiron 3891 is equipped with an Intel B560-based MicroATX motherboard. The motherboard has two DDR4-2666 DIMM slots, which supports a maximum of two 32 GB DIMM memory sticks, taking the total RAM up to 64 GB. But the model we are testing comes installed with a lonely 8 GB module only.

The motherboard also has an M.2 Slot equipped with a 256 GB SSD, which is PCI Express Gen 3. It’s a tiny drive, but the M.2 slot accepts up to Type-2280 (80mm) drive. There is a single PCI Express x16 slot for some expansion cards. The motherboard comes with more than one SATA port, but there is no practical space for the new drives to add if you need.

The only cooling solution is the CPU fan, but it is smartly covered with a smartly designed funnel that lets it exhaust the hot air directly outside the case’s back. This computer stays practically silent even at full CPU usage.

Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891 Performance

Let’s talk about the performance of the Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891. Our model contains an Intel Core i3-10105, which is a quad-core CPU. The base clock speed of this CPU is 3.7 GHz, but it can turbo-boost itself up to 4.4 GHz. The CPU is paired with an Intel UHD 630 integrated graphics and 8 GB of RAM. A 256 GB SSD is used as a boot device and storage space which might not be sufficient for everyone, but it can be ordered with a hard drive at a pretty decent value increase in the base option.

The Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891 is loaded with the latest operating system offered by Microsoft, Windows 11 Home, and a one-year warranty. It is bundled with a 12-month subscription of McAfee LiveSafe anti-malware subscription and a keyboard and mouse kit.

The keyboard and mouse are of pretty good quality. The keyboard specifically is comfortable and can be used for long typing sessions. The mouse buttons can feel a bit on the hard side, but it is decent to be bundled as a freebie.

The Core i3-10105 is a mildly bumped-up Core i3-10100 in frequency. Core i3-10105 was released alongside “Rocket Lake” 11th Gen processors earlier this year. As the “Rocket Lake” lineup doesn’t consist of any low-end chips, some 10th Gen processors were released with a slight performance and named “Comet Lake Refresh.”

The 65-watt CPU performance is superior to Intel Celeron, Pentium, and Athlon chips manufactured by AMD. Still, you have to lower your expectations, considering the lower price of these machines. If you are a heavy multitasking user, you can use the equipped 8 GB RAM much faster and make the computer feel sluggish. Adding another 8 GB stick in the system is recommended as you can find it at a lower price in the aftermarket places.

For the gaming performance, you can expect to run the games you can run on an integrated graphic card. Don’t expect it to perform excellent with heavy triple AAA titles of the modern era. This machine is not built for gaming purposes, but you can play some light games here and there.

We can say that the Dell Inspiron Desktop 3891 is a budget pc done right as it ticks all the boxes with its performance for the price you are paying for it.
