Sign Out of All Accounts

The first step is to migrate your data to the new Mac Device, or you can make one last backup to save your data. It is time to remove all your data from your old device. So, to factory reset your MacBook, let’s start with signing out of all accounts. A few years ago, this feature was accessible via iTunes, but now you have to individually sign out of all three apps- TV, Books, and Music.

You need to open up one of those applications and visit the Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer. You are required to enter your Apple ID and password and then press the ‘Deauthorize’ button.

The next step to factory reset the MacBook is to turn off Find My Mac and sign out of iCloud. Visit the System Preferences > Apple ID, tap on the iCloud icon given in the left panel and uncheck ‘Find My Mac.’ Now, click on the Overview option visible on the left panel, then tap on the Sign Out button.

In the end, you have to sign out of Messages. Start by opening the Messaging app, visiting Messages > Preferences, clicking on the iMessage tab, and pressing the Sign Out button.

Reset NVRAM

If you are unfamiliar with the tech parts of the Mac device, then you should know that NVRAM is a memory in which your Mac saves settings before loading MacOS. It keeps volume level, startup-disk selection, time zone, and screen resolution. Sometimes these files can get corrupted, so you need to give your MacBook’s next owner a fresh start by resetting your NVRAM. In order to reset it, shut down your Mac, then turn it on and immediately press and hold four keys together- Command, Option, P, and R. Next, after 20 seconds or so, you can release the keys. And that is how you reset your NVRAM to factory reset the MacBook.

Bluetooth Unpairing

Bluetooth unpairing may seem unnecessary to you, but it is essential to factory reset the MacBook. If you give away or decide to sell your M1 MacBook Pro, unpair your Bluetooth. It is a good idea to remove your device from it so that your mouse and keyboard can control the new MacBook. Removing your device from Bluetooth won’t interfere with the old one. To do so, visit the System Preferences > Bluetooth, and move over to the device you need to unpair, tap the X button to the right side and press the Remove button.

Factory Reset MacBook

Finally, we have reached the process to factory reset MacBook when planning to sell your M1 MacBook Pro or Air. To factory reset the MacBook, put your device into recovery mode. It will help you remove all of your data and reinstall macOS properly. To enter Recovery mode on an Intel-based Mac, you need to restart it. Then, press and hold Command-R, and you can release the keys once the Apple logo is visible to you.

If you need to factory reset a MacBook (an M1-based Mac), then the process of booting into recovery mode is a bit different. To do this, you need to press and hold the power button until the startup options window is visible to you. After that, tap on Options and Continue to get the utility window.

Next, the MacOS Utilities Window will be visible to you. You need to select the option Disk Utility, then tap on Continue and choose your startup disk. If you have renamed it, it’s probably appearing as ‘Macintosh HD,’ or it can be something similar. In the next step, tap the Erase button at the top of the Disk Utility window and enter the details for these two:

  • First, fill out the ‘Name’– select a name for the fresh and new volume.
  • The next one is ‘Format’- Here, you need to choose APFS.

If you have an outdated version of Mac with a mechanical hard drive rather than a solid-state drive, you need to select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for Format. Next, you need to tap on the Erase Volume Group, and after Disk Utility does its trick, you need to quit Disk Utility.

Note- If the ‘Erase Volume Group’ button in the lower-left corner is not visible to you, then click the Erase button given in the lower-right corner.

Now, return to the MacOS utility window (if not possible, restart your Mac again, press and hold the Command-R while it reboots.) After that, select Reinstall MacOS from the Utility Window and follow the steps to install the operating system. After installing the MacOS, you will meet up with the Setup Assistant to exit and shut down your device. At last, the planning to sell your M1 MacBook Pro is complete. With these steps, the process to factory reset your MacBook is finished and is ready for its new owner.
